Desmond Méndez April 6 1980, Rio Bueno, Trelawny Parish, Jamaica
At the age of five, he began his ascent into the world of music by participating in singing competitions. As a student, he attended Rio Bueno Primary School and Rio Bueno High School.
As part of the Warlord International and Bass Odyssey sound systems, Mendez has been a part of the sound system. The single “Woman It’s You” was Tony Mentol’s first recorded release under the name Tony Mentol, released in 2004. He eventually switched aliases to Charly Black and recorded a string of cuts for labels like Coppershot, M Bass, and VP, the last of which issued “Buddy Buddy” in 2008. During 2012, he released “Whine & Kotch” with the Jamaican singer J Capri on the label of Head Concussion Records (company of the Jamaican producer Rvssian). This song is one of the most famous dancehall songs in the world. Gyal You a Party Animal, then simply known as “Party Animal”, became his most successful single in 2014. South American audiences gradually embraced the song, based on Kurt Riley’s Jambe-An riddim. A music video for the song was released on YouTube months after the song was licensed worldwide by Allezgo Productions and for the US by Casablanca Records. Over 100 million streams have been recorded on Spotify since then.
