Emrold Anthony Phillip, July 7, 1941, Cherry Hill, Grenada
Having come to Trinidad with his parents on a Carnival Monday when he was five years old, Phillip has made Trinidad his home. Prior to becoming an apprentice tailor, he worked as a printer, electrician, and mechanic. Later, he worked for Bottler’s Limited, which bottles soft drinks such as Ju-C and Pepsi-Cola, on Long Circular Road in St. James. In the early 1960s, he made his first appearance at the Big Bamboo Tent on Park Street in Port of Spain, where he fell in love with calypso. Astor Johnson choreographed ‘Poet and Prophet’, a well-attended concert choreographed by Valentino in 1979 for the Repertory Dance Theatre. Calypsos he has written include:
