As he grew up in Carrefour, south of Port-au-Prince, Charlemagne was influenced as much by the peasants’ songs as by the Catholic school choir. Having been raised by his aunt, he did not discover his father’s identity until he was 37 years old. At the age of 16, he began playing guitar and singing. In 1968, he formed a band called Les Remarquables. Later, he and Marco Jeanty formed a twoubadou band called Les Trouvères
