Jerry “Wonda” Duplessis August 9 1975,Port-au-Prince, Haiti

“Wonda” Duplessis was born and raised in Port-au-Prince, Haiti. He began playing bass at the age of 14. Aston Barrett and James Jamerson were early influences. He was sent to the US at 16 and raised by his father and his aunt, who was also Wyclef’s mother. Their home studio soon became the basement of their family home.

As a result of church, the Institute of Audio Research, and gigs around New Jersey, their home studio “Booga Basement” was opened to serve artists. Later, Wyclef, Samuel Pras Michel, and Lauryn Hill would form the Fugees, a Caribbean-style group. Ruffhouse/Columbia would sign the group to which Wonda and Wyclef would provide production. Cypress Hill and Kris Kross were labelmates at the time.
